The Hidden Wound of Toxic Relationships: Rebuilding Self-Trust After Abuse

Published on 1 July 2025 at 12:54

When most people think about healing from a toxic or abusive relationship, they focus on the big, visible scars, emotional trauma, broken boundaries, grief, and sometimes fear. But there’s a quieter, often invisible wound that many women carry long after they’ve walked away: the loss of self-trust.

You might not even notice it at first.
You just feel stuck.
Hesitant.
Foggy.
Unsure.

You second-guess yourself constantly.
You apologise even when you haven’t done anything wrong.
You struggle to make the smallest decisions without asking others for their input.
You no longer know what you want—or whether you’re even allowed to want it.

That’s what emotional abuse, gaslighting, and long-term control do. They don’t just damage your confidence. They convince you that your inner voice can’t be trusted. And once that inner knowing is silenced, it’s easy to feel powerless, even after the relationship ends.

But here’s the truth:

Your inner voice isn’t gone. She’s just been drowned out. And you can bring her back.

In my work with women recovering from toxic relationships, I’ve learned that rebuilding self-trust is the quiet foundation of every transformation. Once you begin to trust your own thoughts, feelings, and choices again, everything else, boundaries, self-esteem, joy, starts to shift.

What does rebuilding self-trust look like?

  • It looks like pausing before saying "yes" to make sure it’s what you want.

  • It looks like not apologising just to keep the peace.

  • It looks like listening to your intuition and following it—without needing everyone else’s approval.

  • It looks like forgiving yourself for the times you didn’t know better.

  • And it looks like small, daily acts of choosing yourself.

This is the work. Gentle. Patient. Powerful.
