Emotion is the New Punk

Published on 15 September 2025 at 12:17

Once upon a time, punk was ripped jeans, safety pins, and middle fingers in the air. It was raw. Loud. Messy. Unapologetic. It was about refusing to be told how to exist.

Guess what? Emotion is the new punk.

We live in a culture obsessed with control, with “managing” emotions, with painting everything over in pastel affirmations. The healing industry especially loves to tell women: good vibes only, choose joy, manifest harder. Translation: your real, messy feelings are too much.

That’s not healing. That’s emotional censorship dressed up in glitter.

Good Vibes Only = B.S.

“Good vibes only” sounds harmless until you realise it’s just another muzzle. It tells you to shove grief under the rug, laugh off anger, and deny despair because it’s “low vibration.”

I call B.S. In my book, I dedicate a chapter to Fuck High-Vibe Only!

Real rebellion is rage. It’s crying until your body shakes. It’s admitting you’re lonely, furious, horny, or heartbroken without apologising. It’s showing up to your own life fully, without scrubbing your feelings clean for public approval.

Your sadness is not a problem to solve. Your anger is not toxic. Your joy is not contingent on ignoring everything else.

Punk Is Raw. Emotion Is Raw.

Think about it: punk never tried to be pretty. It was sweaty basements, screaming guitars, out-of-tune chords that still shook you to your bones.

That’s what your emotions are. They’re not supposed to be polished. They’re supposed to be raw, disruptive, and human.

Denying them? That’s the real toxicity.

Emotion as Rebellion

The next time someone tells you to “stay high vibe,” try this instead:

  • Honour your low vibes.

  • Scream-sing in the car.

  • Write a rage letter you’ll never send.

  • Let yourself feel ecstatic joy without explaining why.

This isn’t indulgence, it’s rebellion. Because to feel fully is to live fully. And living fully is the ultimate middle finger to every industry, guru, and system that wants to keep you small.

Rebellion in Action

  • Pick one emotion you’ve been avoiding. Let yourself feel it without trying to fix it.

  • Share how you’re really doing with one trusted friend — no filter, no “I’m fine.”

  • Create a playlist of songs that match your mood and blast it unapologetically.

Unlearning Prompts

  • Where did you learn that certain emotions were “bad”?

  • What happens to your being when you deny or suppress what you feel?

  • What might shift if you treated every emotion as sacred data instead of a problem?

Before You Move On

  • Emotion isn’t weakness. It’s rebellion.

  • Punk was never about being pretty — and neither is your truth.

  • “Good vibes only” is the real toxic nonsense.

Your feelings are your power chords. And it’s time to play them loud.
